To Obtain a Credit Report

Maryland residents are entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the major credit reporting bureaus. For your reports call:

  • Equifax: 1-800-685-1111

  • Experian: 1-888-397-3742

  • Trans Union : 1-800-888-4213.

You may also order reports online, but the agency will charge for this service and may not inform you that you are entitled to a free report.

Credit Report Inaccuracies

If you feel your credit report is inaccurate, you may be able to have inaccuracies removed under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. To have inaccurate information deleted from your report, follow these steps suggested by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

  • Write a letter to the credit reporting bureau clearly stating which items are inaccurate and why. Enclose appropriate documentation, and keep copies of all documents and correspondence.

  • The bureau is required by law to investigate within 30 days.

  • If the bureau cannot verify the information in question, it must remove the information from your report within 7 days. They must also send a written correction to you and anyone who has received an erroneous report.

  • The agency will notify you if they have investigated and believe their report is accurate. If you still disagree with the credit reporting agency, you may file a statement to amend your report. As a Maryland resident, you may also request a list of the parties contacted during the investigation.
